January 15, 2006 — These have been an amazing few months. In early September, we didn't even exist. As of today, we have helped hundreds of animals left homeless by Hurricane Katrina. We have raised money for transport, heartworm treatments, and much more. Our funds are almost gone now and we have put the money we raised to immediate use.

We are very proud of the work of volunteers in Louisiana and around the U.S. They proved that "regular" people can accomplish great things. But the best part was helping to place animals into safe and loving homes. We managed to do this on far greater scale then we would have ever imagined thanks to animal lovers like you.

We are now in a planning mode and taking a "breather" so that we can assess what areas we need to focus on next. Our resources are much reduced and public interest in this disaster is waning, but we feel we can still help animals affected by a disaster. We are taking some time to brainstorm about our next steps.

Please check back occasionally for updates. In the meantime, feel free to email your thoughts to info@projectstarfish.org. We thank you for your support and wish you and your companion animals a happy and healthy new year. — Kara Peterson & Cynthia Sweet, Co-Founders
